About Sugar Bowl

A Des Plaines tradition since 1921, serving up smiles with good old-fashioned hospitality and home-style comfort food

Our Story

Sugar Bowl began in 1921 when Mr. and Mrs. Files opened what was originally called “The Sugar Bowl Sweet Shop” – a charming soda fountain and candy store in Des Plaines, IL. It was a place for those with a sweet tooth looking to indulge in sugary delights, creating a suburban tradition that has endured for over a century.

Over the years, this nostalgic eatery has evolved into the breakfast and lunch destination you know today. We specialize in fluffy pancakes, hearty omelettes, satisfying sandwiches, and our famous fresh-squeezed orange juice – all served with the same good old-fashioned hospitality that Mr. and Mrs. Files established over 100 years ago.

Our bright home-style decor creates a warm, welcoming atmosphere that feels like home. And don’t miss our historic neon sign – it’s been lighting up Sugar Bowl since 1957, becoming an iconic landmark that generations of families have come to recognize and love.
